Life was simpler back then, the older generation would proudly say. They were not referring to technology. In fact, they were proud because of the lack of it. With the sudden boom in the technological industry, the youth of today has gotten used to one thing that the older generation didn’t get to experience – the availability of so much options. We are a generation of options. Our smartphones house array of applications that we constantly devour, a pacifier for boredom by providing a wide selection of activities to while away the time. Even social media provides a spectrum of options from Facebook to Instagram to the more updated Tiktok. And within each platform, we have a variety of content to consume. We only give attention to each content for less than a second, because we always need to scroll down to consume more. The faster we scroll down, the more content we see, the better. Unfortunately, this habit that technology has formed within us has trickled down to other facets of life such as our relationships with other people. Modern dating has become such a challenge for this generation. And staying in relationships and marriages is more a feat than ever. Gone were the days when it was so easy to find true love and stay with a person forever. Because now, technology has equipped us with the ability to connect with anyone we want anytime we like anywhere we are. We do not need to worry about whether it will work out for date number one because we have a lot of other options to choose from. This behavior has become so ingrained in us that we sometimes forget to put in effort to make something work out, just because we know we have fallback options to turn to when things fail. We are a generation of options. This is a scary phenomenon. But one that is real and is already happening.
Options allow us to create alternatives in our head that is used as a scapegoat by the mind to avoid pursuing challenges in friendships and relationships. This is a thought that an outside option somewhere is available: one that is different from the now, that doesn’t pose challenges and is perfect. However, this may not always be true. It lures the mind to escape from the task at hand, from pursuing and committing to the current choice. In short, it deprives the person from making a choice and fighting for that choice. That is the danger of having so much options. It prevents this generation from committing and making a choice. It forms a habit of getting away from challenges and fear through jumping into another available choice. It forms weak human beings who can’t make a stand and who can’t fight for something they truly believe in. But what if we start muting those notifications? What if we start becoming intentional with our daily routine? Technology will always be on the rise. It is a world domination that has contributed so much good (aside from the bad) and will continue to exist in the next millennia. However, we have a choice to take control, to swim through the options and make a choice. After all, those options are all merely external. We still have the capacity to dominate ourselves and to regulate what we say “yes” to and what we consume every day. We hope you become more aware of the wide array of options around you and we hope you be knowledgeable enough to intentionally choose the right one every day.
